TRW is developing a novel system of protection for pedestrians

TRW Visuel_Pedestrian_Protection_system_no_text
global leader in active safety systems and passive, TRW has developed an advanced system to protect pedestrians. It uses up to three acceleration sensors (Remote Acceleration Sensors or RAS) located in the area of the front bumper. These sensors transmit signals continuously accelerated to an electronic computer (Electronic Control Unit or ECU) which analyzes the data. Collision, the system determines the nature of the obstacle encountered (human body or subject of another kind). If it is a pedestrian, the system activates mechanisms cylinders on each side cover to enhance and increase the space between the hood and engine deformable bodies. This system helps reduce the severity of injuries caused by the collision.

TRW, which has extensive experience in passive safety, has chosen to integrate the software with an electronic airbag "home" already exists. This reduces costs but also more reliable system. Thus, the integration provides a better interaction between the algorithms for detecting frontal impacts and impacts with a pedestrian, thereby improving the overall performance level of detection.
The system offers many other advantages, including flexibility to adapt the sensors to the most customizable vehicles, a communication interface electronics using established protocols in the industry for compatibility and reliability of high-level but also the use of an algorithm unique to TRW to detect impact with a pedestrian.
We shall soon see, because it is already in production for a European automaker.
